Mock Trial
On January 16th, members of the Mock Trial club competed in the New Jersey State Bar Foundation's High School Mock Trial Competition. The case this year involved a civil matter, where a young woman was seeking compensation from an amusement park for neck injuries sustained while riding a roller coaster. Students met once a week during Advisory, learning the facts of the case, the applicable laws, the trial process, and court procedure. During one session, we invited attorney Joseph Angelo to be our "guest judge." Mr. Angelo provided advice for our attorneys and witnesses on their performances and what to expect in the courtroom. Although we did not advance beyond the county level of competition, students learned a lot about the process. They were able to observe the performances of experienced school teams, and they received encouraging words from the judges about their first trial participation. The next NJSBF Mock Trial Competition will involve a criminal case and will be announced next fall. Students are looking forward to next year's competition and building upon the knowledge they gained from their experience this year.
