Focus on Service

This fall, the National Honor Society delivered hand-knit hats to St. Joseph's NIC Unit. The hats were part of a community service project NHS members coordinated last spring. Students met with expert knitting volunteers including Mrs. Evans and Sister Emy on two afternoons in April to learn how to crochet the hats. A special yarn was used to ensure the hats were hypoallergenic and super-soft for each newborn's delicate head. Over the next few months, we received hand-knit hat donations from students, administration and faculty. Over 150 hats were delivered by Jaileen Alvarez, an NHS member along with Mrs. Redmon and several other Mary Help hospital interns. The hats will be paired with hand made blankets and given as a gift to new families going home from the hospital.

National Honor Society members are involved in community service projects throughout the year. This year we assisted the Forensics Team with their on-site competition. In addition, one of the most successful programs members have been involved in is the NHS Peer Tutoring program. Students are referred to the program by their teachers. NHS members meet with students to give them extra academic support and mentor them on homework and study skills.

Invitations to apply were sent out in late January and in early February to Juniors who meet the initial requirements to be considered for the National Honor Society. For more information on procedures and requirements for becoming an NHS member, please see the student handbook.
